Welcome Sharks to the 2020-2021 School year!
August 19, 2020
Hello Sharks and welcome to the new school year. I hope you all had a fantastic summer and enjoyed relaxing these past couple of months. As you all know, we will have a very unique school year due to the pandemic. We will begin our school year through Distance Learning.
Although, this will be different than the traditional in-class model, this will not prevent us from continuing to stay active and learning in physical education class.
Links to class materials are provided through Google Classroom. You will find the link to Google Classroom on our Canvas page. We will learn through virtual platforms with both Live Zoom sessions as well as asynchronous instruction. Be sure to come to class ready to learn. I am looking forward to "seeing" you all tomorrow for our first day of class.

Dear Shark Squad
May 28, 2020
The 2019-2020 4th period Peer Buddy program has been one of the biggest successes for the program since its' beginning. This year's model was a full inclusion class period in which all students participated in class lessons and activities. Though our year has been cut short, I am so very proud of how much this class created a different culture and expectation in exemplifying South Lake Cares. It is unfortunate that we were unable to do our annual end of the year Buddies celebration, but I know that these friendships will continue. Below you can watch my Peer Buddies saying a personal message to each of their Buddies in Ms. Park's class. Thank you Sharks for all your hard work, dedication and the friendships you've build with one another.

Shout out to these AMAZING former Sharks and current freshmen in high school: Kana B., Taylor L., Mia P., Sean M., Naomi L., Dennis S., and Caitlin V. They took time out of their day to sit down and answer some questions that our current 8th graders had regarding high school. Even in quarantine, our Sharks continue to be a community. Thank you so much, I truly appreciate it. |
Challenge Week
May 12, 2020
This week students in my EDL PE class completed a different sport challenge each day. The challenges varied from shooting an object into a hoop, hitting an object with their hand as many consecutive times as they can, and juggling a ball with their feet without it hitting the ground. Students had the option of using any objects they could find at home, including making a paper ball. Here are some examples of videos that students submitted.

We're taking a break from the track and field unit today for some fitness fun. Here's a fun game to play at home with the entire family! Modify the rules and exercise however you feel is needed so students of all ages can participate. If it is too challenging then lower the repetition, but if it is too easy then add in some weights or complete more reps! The goal is to HAVE FUN while staying active. Enjoy!

EDL Track and Field Unit: Relay Race
April 22, 2020
The next event in our EDL Track and Field unit is my favorite event: The relay race. In this lesson students learned and practice the baton hand-off; which is important in any relay race. After practicing, students will submit a video of them demonstrating the hand-off and running from the right side of the screen to the left. The goal is to make a compilation video of students handing the baton off to each just like in a relay race. Check out the example video below.

This allows options for students to select an event that they can practice at home. The first two events that we are starting with will be the 100-meter sprint and the shot put. Below are the lessons and videos.

Soccer Unit Update
December 13, 2019
This week my class focused on learning soccer formations and preparing for their in-class soccer tournament. At the start of the week, the head coach and captain from each team worked together to develop their soccer formation. Then they were given time to practice lining up in that formation and practice where to move on the field depending on where the ball is located. We ended the week with some fun by playing the soccer version of "Steal the Bacon." You can check out the videos below of this activity. We will begin game play next week and conclude our soccer unit with a final assessment.

Harvest Cup REcap
December 9, 2019
The Harvest Cup Soccer Tournament was this past weekend and our Sharks did a fantastic job competing and representing South Lake Middle School. Our girls’ team won their first game, 3 to 1, with goals scored by Shay, Sarah, and Delia. They played extremely hard the second game but lost and were eliminated from the tournament.
The boys’ team found success in the quarterfinal round thanks to a game winning score by Jayden. In the semi-finals, the game ended with a 1 to 1 tie so we went to penalty shootout. After an intense back-and-forth penalty kick, Nikhil came up with the big time game winning save to send the team into the championship. The boys played a tough championship game but came up short. Nevertheless, we are extremely proud of our Sharks and the way they competed this weekend despite the rainy weather. A BIG thank you to Ms. Jones, Ms. Plick, Ms. Holcomb, Mr. Lin, Mr. Kette, and Mrs. Averill for coming out and cheering on our teams.

Team Handball / mamba ball
September 13, 2019
With Mamba ball being the first Lunchtime Sports of the school year, students in my class spent this week learning and practicing how to play. Mamba ball is a sport created at South Lake. It utilizes the rules to Ultimate Frisbee but instead of throwing a frisbee, students are throwing a small squishy dodge ball. It's a great sport to start the year as students learn the basic skills to throwing and catching a ball. To supplement those two skills, we also played Team Handball on the blacktop. Below are some pictures and videos from this week. Next week we will start the flag football unit!

Staff vs Student Softball Game
June 5, 2019
The annual Staff vs Student Softball game on the last full day of school turned out to be an epic game. The Student team jumped to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning but the South Lake staff team was resilient and came back to tie the game 6-6. With one runner on base and Mr. Lin at-bat, the Student team made a great defensive stop to hold on for the tie. Well done, Sharks! Thank you to all the South Lake Staff for coming out and participating in this year's game. You view more pictures from the game by going to the PBIS: Events tab.

Field Games!
June 4, 2019
With all the locks returned and PE clothes put away, students in my class enjoyed a fun-filled day playing four different field games. Students in period 1 and 3 competed during yesterday's block schedule while class period 2, 4, 6 got a chance to play today. The four games were:
Spinning Bat Relay - This was no ordinary relay race! Students had to spin around a bat 10 times first before they can run to the other end of the field to tag their teammates. First team to finish the relay was the winner!
Blindfold Soccer - Each team had two students who had to blindfold themselves while their teammates gave verbal cues and instructions to help guide them towards scoring a goal.
Hula-Hoop Race - Teams had to link up their hands and transfer the hula hoop from one end of the field to the other.
Tug-o-war - The last activity is the traditional tug-o-war where each team had to go up against two opposing teams to see if they can pull the other team across the line.
This was a great way to end my physical education class this school year. It was so much fun watching students compete against each other in these silly games. Check out the videos below to see these games in action!

To celebrate the hard work our Peer Buddies did this entire year, we joined Ms. Park's class on a very special field trip to Irvine Lanes. A group of 25 students gathered together and spent three hours with friends. Students got to enjoy bowling and eating pizza and a variety of snacks. My students have done such an amazing job this year displaying patience and developing their peer friendships with their buddies outside of my physical education class. Amazing work Sharks!

Quidditch!

May 14, 2019:
It is our second week of state testing so South Lake continues to be on block scheduling this week. To accommodate for the long block period, students in my class have been participating in multiple activities. The past two days, my students have started the block period with a workout. Students exercised with a workout partner just like how they would at a local gym. After their workout, we took a break and I introduced Quidditch; the fictional sport from the wonderful world of Harry Potter. Students had a great time flying around on their "broomstick" to score the quaffle and capturing the "golden snitch." I attached a couple of videos from our game today for your view.

CLASS UPDATE: Block Schedule
April 11, 2019:
Due to the block schedule the past two days, students have been participating in physical education class for a longer period of time than they normally do. I decided to take a break from our softball unit to play some fun games and activities. We started the class with a 15 minute zone run to warm-up. After the run, we got into teams of 4-7 students to play what I call, recreational games. There were five games: handball, four square, badminton, basketball, and volleyball. There are two teams at each activity and we rotate every 6-8 minutes. We ended physical education class by playing one big game of capture the flag where students focus on retrieving a soccer ball, football, and frisbee for their team. Despite the long period, time definitely flew by!

Track and Field Closing Ceremony
March 29, 2019:
We ended the track and field unit with a 2-day track meet where students worked in teams of 5 to compete in six events: "100m" sprint (officially 80m), "400m" run (officially 275m), relay race, shot put, discus throw, and standing broad jump. As a team, students collaborated to determine which event each of them will compete in. Points were based on what place each student got for their team in their group of competition. At the end, all of the points were added up and below are the gold, silver, and bronze medal winners in each class. You can also view the top 5 students in each event from all six PE classes. Great job, Sharks!

lunchtime sports soccer champions!
March 19, 2019:
Congratulations to the Pateadores on winning this season's LTS soccer tournament! The Pateadores advanced to the championship game thanks to a back-to-back penalty shootout win against Goofy Goobers and Unicorn Fam. In the exhilarating championship game against Real Madrid, the Pateadores went on the attack early but struggled to find the back of the net. They eventually broke through and led 1-0. It didn't take long for the Pateadores to score a second goal, this time off of a rebound which put them up 2-0. Real Madrid showed resiliency and played hard despite the deficit. An unbelievable goal by Fabio F. (Real Madrid) scoring from mid-field to put his team on the board. The championship game held a 2-1 score till the end with the Pateadores emerging victorious. Great job to all athletes who competed in this year's soccer season!
